The most annoying video game characters of all time

Over the years, video games have brought us some of the greatest characters we’ve had the pleasure to get to know and play as, but they’ve also brought us plenty of absolute stinkers who have wound us up no end.

These god-tier irritants had us shouting “Shut up!” at the screen, punching the floor, and doing everything we could to not fling our controllers through the TV. So, without further ado, it’s time to list the absolute worst offenders when it comes to getting under players’ skin and driving them wild.

  1. The Adoring Fan (Oblivion)
  2. Slippy Toad (Star Fox)
  3. Roman Bellic (GTA IV)
  4. Raiden (Metal Gear Solid 2)
  5. Eric Sparrow (Tony Hawk’s Underground)
  6. Ashley (Resident Evil 4)
  7. Navi (Ocarina of Time)
  8. Baby Mario (Yoshi’s Island)

The Adoring Fan (Oblivion)

You can tell just by looking at his ultra-punchable face that this is someone who would really push your buttons. After you become the Grand Champion in the arena, the Adoring Fan will approach you and, in his annoying voice and ridiculous accent, tell you that he’s going to “worship you and watch you and worship the ground you walk on”, and then follow you wherever you go. The sense of relief when you inevitably snap and destroy him is one that every gamer deserves to experience.

Slippy Toad (Star Fox)

Despite Star Fox constantly telling you how handy Slippy is to have around for his skills as a mechanic, as soon as you enter combat with him by your side, you’ll begin to question his place in the team. This infuriating amphibian seems to be a dab hand at getting into trouble almost immediately and then squawking at you incessantly to come and help him out. Definitely worry when Slippy’s here.

Roman Bellic (GTA IV)

On the whole, Roman’s a pretty likeable character throughout GTA IV’s epic story; however, once the game introduces activities which you can do with your various contacts, the floodgates open…

From this point, you’ll be inundated with call after call from your dear cousin trying to get you to go bowling with him. When you finally give in just to shut him up, you’re treated to a not very enjoyable bowling minigame, and then a new onslaught of calls almost immediately afterwards.

Raiden (Metal Gear Solid 2)

When we first got our hands on Metal Gear Solid 2, we were all a little surprised [read: horrified] not to be playing as Solid Snake. Instead of the series’ rough and ready legendary hero, we found ourselves running around as the long-haired, whiny-voiced wimp Raiden for completely unknown reasons. The game still kicked ass, but thankfully Hideo Kojima got the message and MGS 3 was a Snake-only affair.

Eric Sparrow (Tony Hawk’s Underground)

Eric Sparrow is the ultimate douchebag. The main antagonist of Tony Hawk’s Underground spends basically the entire game taking credit for your gnarly skating achievements, taunting you and getting you into trouble. Like several other members of this list, he also has a nails-on-chalkboard voice that’s guaranteed to have your fists clenched every time he opens his treacherous mouth.

Ashley Graham (Resident Evil 4)

video games 1xbit

Ashley Graham is the young daughter of the US president in Resident Evil 4 and is the reason the hero, Leon, is sent to an island inhabited by Spanish zombies. The trouble begins when you actually find her and have to escort her through long sections of the game, when she proves just how incompetent she is. Sure, she’s just a kid, but surely, they could have given her some kind of useful ability? Apparently not, which is why she’s earned her spot on this list.

Navi (Ocarina of Time)

You wouldn’t think a fairy who serves as your guide could end up being such a pain in the ass, but this little glowing ball of unhelpfulness was absolutely unbearable in Ocarina of Time. With her constant chirping of “Hey!”, “Listen!”, “Watch out!” in the squeakiest of squeaky voices, she’s without a doubt the worst part of one of the greatest games of all time.

Baby Mario (Yoshi’s Island)

We’re sure you’ll agree that there are few sounds more cringe-inducing and infuriating than a baby’s cry – humans have evolved to find it unbearable – which is precisely what made this little monster a complete nightmare in Yoshi’s Island. Any time Baby Mario is separated from Yoshi, the player is subjected to a seemingly unending tirade of crying baby horror.

Tails (Sonic 2)

video games 1xbit

Sure, everyone loves Tails now, but when he made his first appearance in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, he established himself as a hopeless liability in almost every way. He wasn’t fast enough to keep up with Sonic, which meant endless pit stops to wait for him to catch up, and the QI of his AI was somewhere in the single digits, and would have him accidentally blowing himself up like it was going out of fashion. Luckily, he did manage to get his act together for subsequent appearances.

Mr Resetti (Animal Crossing)

Initially, this angry little mole seems like a fun addition to the charming world of Animal Crossing – if you reset the game without saving first, he’ll appear the next time you jump into your island and chew you out for it. However, after the third or fourth time and the obligatory lecture you have to scroll through, you begin to wish you could stomp him right back into that little hole he popped out of.
