UFC wants to rise to the heavyweight metaverse division

Last year, the NBA had been a top scorer in the crypto/NFT space as the association promoted wide adoption of crypto payments and licensed a mega-popular marketplace for digital collectibles, the NBA Top Shot. But now it has a tough competitor in the face of the UFC that opened its arms, and marketing funnels, to prominent companies from the crypto industry. Regular blog readers surely noticed that the MMA promotion has been featured quite often in our stories, and for a good reason.

Over the past few months, UFC released a fan token in collaboration with Socios.com, struck a huge kit partnership deal with Crypto.com, along with deals with blockchain logistics firm VeChain as well as the blockchain games and NFT development studio Dapper Labs. Together with the last firm, the MMA organization launched the UFC Strike collection that gathered memorable moments from many thrilling fights inside the octagon. As it turns out, this is only the tip of the iceberg as there are major crypto adoption plans brewing inside Dana White’s office.

The details, although very scarce, of UFC’s crypto ambitions were revealed by Josh Gerben, the head of the corporate management firm Gerben Intellectual Property. According to this attorney, the filing that the sports organization submitted to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on June 8 contains a score of trademark applications that can be divided into three categories: software as service (SaaS), an online platform (both of which must facilitate crypto payments, management, and trading), and a means for online community building.

Gerben didn’t provide any further information as to what the trademarks would be implemented in the sports organization or how the community would be managed, but UFC's resolve to become a top dog in the crypto game is evident. Perhaps the crypto market could learn from elite fighters how to recover quickly after taking a bloody beating.
