Shawn Kurz: The Man Who Designs NBA Merch and Fights Hunger Through Blockchain

The world has never been a safe place: whether it’s wars or a global pandemic, people are suffering every day in one way or another. But there is one problem that runs like a red thread through centuries - it’s global hunger. In this blog post, we will tell you of a noble person who started a blockchain startup that addresses this burning issue.

Shawn Kurz switches from designing merch to fighting hunger

As the world moves closer towards the new techno-economic paradigm, people begin to see the impotence of politicians in the face of big challenges like climate change or global hunger. All they do is talk, express deep concern, and then go back to shady dealings. That is the reason why more and more people who don’t possess political influence, but who do possess the will to make the difference, begin to take matters into their own hands. It comes as no surprise that many such activists emerge from the blockchain community. They don’t have the backing of large funds and financial institutions; they don’t rely on the support of big media outlets. These individuals simply come up with the initiatives, wanting to make a difference.

One of such people is Shawn Kurz, a seemingly ordinary guy who makes a living designing NBA merchandise and supplying coffee to large U.S. retailers - he also calls himself the “deconstructed Christian,” whatever that means. But lately, he became known for establishing a blockchain-based non-profit organization called FoodChain Global (FCG) in an effort to help combat global hunger. He did that in collaboration with the ex-military systems engineer Cody Boyd who took charge of the blockchain development team.

FOOD tokens could help feed the needy

To achieve this lofty goal, the team released two blockchain products, the fungible token called FoodChain Global (FOOD), along with non-fungible tokens (NFTs) - all proceeds from sales of which will be used to purchase food to replenish food banks across the world. According to Kurz, FCG’s other goal is to raise awareness among the youth, the Millenials and the representatives of Generation Z, who would be more willing to contribute to this cause through techie things like tokens and blockchain that appeal to them for being more engaging and interactive.

Kurz also blamed the crypto community for being preoccupied with useless things like meme coins instead of focusing on the development of meaningful solutions that can “showcase the good side of the technology.” Besides, unlike the traditional charities, FCG offers the contributors a means to follow their money, meaning that they could track where the money is allocated and how these funds are spent. The tokens offered by the project are created on the Polygon blockchain which is a faster and much cheaper alternative to the Ethereum network.
