“Only the best is good enough!” 5 of the best Lego games from down the years

Unless Meccano, Scalextric or Micro Machines really tickled your fancy back when you were a kid, chances are Lego is that magical toy that takes you back to childhood. Of course, given its status as “toy of choice” for many, it’s hardly surprising that this Danish behemoth has also leant its name to quite a few fantastic video games over the years.

Whether it’s Star Wars, Marvel and DC Superheroes, Indiana Jones or Jurassic Park that floats your boat, you can bet your bottom dollar that there’s a Lego game to suit your tastes.

So, with yet another Lego game hitting our shelves recently, we thought there’s no time like the present to take a look back at some of the best Lego games we’ve been able to get our grubby mitts on down the years.

Lego Jurassic World

Welcome…to Jurassic World! (Queue epic theme music)” You’ve guessed it, we’re kicking off this week’s Lego game extravaganza with Jurassic Park, which well and truly scratches the itch we’ve all got for some Dinosaur-themed Lego action.

In terms of gameplay, this game is pretty standard for a Lego game, as it tasks us with solving a range of puzzles. However, what makes it unique is that it features 5 levels from each of the first four films of the Jurassic Park franchise, each of which recreate iconic scenes from each of these films with a healthy dose of humour to appeal to a younger audience.

What’s more, due to the need to appeal to a younger demographic, all of the death scenes from the original films were removed in the game, with characters either just getting injured or somehow miraculously surviving, which actually end up making things even funnier.

Lego Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game

We turn our attention to, yet another Lego title based on a smash-hit film franchise (you can probably see a theme developing here!) with this week’s second entry, Lego Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game. Much like Jurassic World, Pirates of the Caribbean also allow us to relive the highlights of the first four POTC films in a humorous way.

In fact, it adds even more Jack Sparrow-esque slapstick humour to proceedings with some truly hilarious moments that will most definitely shiver your timbers that weren’t in the original films.

Lego Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures

We continue with the Hollywood blockbuster theme now with Lego Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures, where you…. (drum roll) …. follow the adventures of everyone’s favourite all-action archaeology professor.

Much like the previous two games, Lego Indiana Jones’ story mode follows the events of the first three Indiana Jones films (sorry all you Kingdom of the Crystal Skulls fans, if you’re out there!) and features iconic scenes from the films such as the boulder escape, as well as Walter Donovan choosing the incorrect Holy Grail.

Does it reinvent the wheel? Not really! Is it a little dated now? Yes. Is it still an absolute blast of a game regardless? Of course, it is.

Lego Dimensions

Just to be a bit contraire, we take a slight break from the games based on films with this week’s penultimate title, Lego Dimensions. Whilst the gameplay in Dimensions is, you’ve guessed it, pretty similar to pretty much any other Lego game, what sets it apart from other such games is the sheer scale of the thing.

Featuring characters from franchises such as Sonic, Lord of the Rings, Marvel, DC, Batman, The Simpsons, Doctor Who and even Ghostbusters, Dimensions’ adventures are guaranteed to appeal to pretty much everyone.

All to that more DLC than you can shake a stick at, and you’ve got a game that has enough content to keep you busy for years to come.

Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga

We round things off this week by taking a trip to a game galaxy far, far away with Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga. Whilst we were spoilt for choice here, The Skywalker Saga is the definite Lego Star Wars game.

Featuring no fewer than 45 levels based on the events of all 9 Star Wars films, this game is packed with iconic Star Wars moments, puzzles and challenges, all of which bumps the replayability factor up to 11. As if that’s not enough, it also features an easter egg that appears to confirm (get your tin foil hats at the ready) that the much-maligned Jar Jar Binks was actually a dark Sith Lord all along.

So, if you’re looking for a humorous Star Wars game to dig your teeth into, look no further and may the force be with you!
