Simply the best…. better than all the rest! 5 of 2022’s best games

Whilst video games may not chalked up as many sales as in 2020 or 2021, and we haven’t exactly been blessed with a plethora of Blockbuster titles over the last 12 months, we’ve still had plenty of exciting games to choose from in 2022. What’s more, the absence of such “big hitter” titles has allowed more niche, off-the-wall titles to flourish and capture gamers’ attention.

So, as 2022 draws to a close we take a look at 5 weird and wacky titles that have provided plenty of gaming thrills this past year.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge

We kick things off this week with a title that’s bound to scratch your itch to indulge your inner 80s/90s kid and kick some serious ass whilst controlling your favorite heroes in a half-shell, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge.

Shredder’s Revenge is an unashamedly retro side-scrolling beat ‘em up, which pays homage to the notoriously difficult Konami TMNT arcade games from the late 80s and early 90s. However, unlike back then, you and your friends can stick it to dastardly villains like Krang, Bebop and Rocksteady and Shredder without having to run to the change machine every 5 minutes like back in the day.

All of the above obviously proved to be a winning combination, as this title has won plenty of plaudits and sold more than 1 million copies in its first week on sale.

Rollerdome

Ever wondered what Tony Hawk Pro Skater would be like with guns, on rollerskates and with a healthy dose of a battle royale vibe thrown in for good measure? Well, now you no longer have to as that’s essentially what Rollderdome is.

The aim of the game here is simple. Perform tricks to get more bullets, which you use to kill gun down your enemies, unlocking more powerful weapons and facing more fiendish foes as you progress.

Ok, it might not be the most sophisticated game in the world, but when you’re having a blast doing backflips and firing rocket launchers like there’s no tomorrow, who needs sophistication?

Metal: Hellsinger

“Master, master, it’s the game that I’ve been after… Master, master, can’t believe my eyes.” Funcom really turned the entertainment value into this game which essentially melds Doom and Guitar Hero to produce a devilishly addictive FPS title that tasks you with killing a demon with a sword and a bunch of guns as loud as an 80s Motorhead gig.

Speaking of loud, this game boasts a soundtrack teeming with chugging riffage/metal goodness from the likes of Alissa White-Gluz (Arch Enemy), Matt Heafy (Trivium), Randy Blythe (Lamb of God), and Serj Tankian (System of a Down).

So, if you want to rock out whilst sticking it to some bad guys, this game is right up your street!

Serial Cleaners

Serial Cleaners is a top-down stealth game with a dark twist, as you take control of 4 characters, each with their own unique style, working as murder scene cleaners for the mob in 1990s New York.

Whilst it sounds grimmer than you can possibly imagine, Serial Cleaners is actually an engrossing game that constantly keeps your toes. Whether it’s having to distract the police so you can quickly clean up some blood off the floor or hacking a camera so you can dispose of a body undetected, every level in this game brings with it a series of challenges that will require you to think on your feet.

Raft

We round things off this week with another game that will put your brain through its paces, Raft. As you’ve probably guessed by its title, this sandbox survival game places you on a raft in the ocean, which you can upgrade as you progress.

However, that’s just scratching the surface of what this game entails. In Raft, you’ll need to manage basic needs such as food and drink by fishing, purifying water and even growing your own food, fend off attacks from sharks and even explore islands to get special items/resources.

You can also get your hands on special resources by diving in coastal regions.

So, if you’re looking for an engrossing survival simulator in which humanity has been devastated by the effects of climate change, look no further.
