Six Nations Championships

The Six Nations Championships, also known as Six Nations, is a rugby tournament that features teams from six countries in Europe: Ireland, England, Wales, Scotland, France, and Italy.

Teams face off during the five-day tournament, with each team having a chance to play the others in qualification rounds until the winner is decided by tallying up the teams’ points. The team with the highest number of points is then declared the ‘Grand Slam Winner’.

Six Nations is usually held from February to March.

Rugby Sevens Series

The Rugby Sevens Series is another highly popular rugby tournament. The tournament, also known as the ‘Sevens’, features the best male and female teams from different countries worldwide.

Unlike most rugby tournaments, the Sevens is unique since its governing body has changed some of the rugby union rules. The Sevens gameplay involves only 7 players on each team instead of the traditional 15 and the matches last for 14 minutes instead of the traditional 90. Having only seven players per team gives the tournament its name.

The Rugby Sevens tournament participating teams take part in a series of ten regional tournaments that usually begin in November and last until May. During this time, the teams have matches held on different continents and countries, making it one of the most regionally-diverse annual rugby tournaments.

Winners of the Rugby Seven Series are determined through the accumulation of points in each leg of the tournament.

United Rugby Championship

The United Rugby Championship (URC) is an annual rugby union competition involving professional teams from Ireland, Italy, Scotland, South Africa, and Wales.

Originally, the United Rugby Championship was known as the Celtic League and only featured teams from Scotland, Ireland, and Wales. Then, it was changed into the Pro-12, then Pro-14 cup, after including teams from outside the Celtic nations.

Most recently, in 2021, the league rebranded from being known as the Pro-14 Cup to the United Rugby Championship, and now includes teams from South Africa.

During the tournament, teams are split into regional pools: the Welsh shield pool, the Irish shield pool, the Scottish and Italian shield pool, and the South African shield pool. Each of the teams in the pools then plays other teams in their pool twice, home and away, and then also plays the teams from the other pools twice - home and away, without repetition. These eventually add up to a total of 18 matches during a regular season.

After the regular season, there are play-offs consisting of the top eight teams determined by total points, which then continue competing until the two teams with the most points face off in the finals.

The United Rugby Champion games are held between September and May.

European Champions Cup

One of the biggest annual tournaments in Europe is known as the European Champions Cup or the Heineken Champions Cup. This tournament features teams from Europe: Ireland, England, Wales, Scotland, France, and Italy, which also feature in the Six Nations Cup.

Recently, the European Champions Cup also featured teams from South Africa, thus becoming a more internationally inclusive rugby tournament.

The 24 teams that take part in the European Champions Cup are all top qualifiers from their regional rugby tournaments. Once in the Champions Cup, the teams face off in a series of group stage and knock-out stage matches, with the top two teams battling it out in the finals.

The tournament matches are held between December and May, with the final being played in May.

Australia NRL

The Australia National Rugby League features teams from Australia and New Zealand, two of the most recognized nations in rugby.

During the tournament, which is held from March to October, teams from the two countries face it off in the regular seasons where they accrue points depending on the number of wins, losses, and draws. The top eight teams at the end of the regular season then face off in the final series held at the end of September until the top two teams - according to accumulated points - are determined.

The final match is a face-off between the top two teams, with the winner is declared the champion of the Australian NRL
