Canadian Grand Prix

F1 fans, start your engines! On Sunday June 19, round 9 of the F1 season, the Canadian Grand Prix, will take place at the 4.361-kilometre Gilles-Villeneuve circuit in Montreal. It goes without saying that this race is bound to be an eventful one as F1 returns to this circuit for the first time in 3 years.

At the last race in 2019, it was Lewis Hamilton who took the chequered flag, followed by four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel in second place. However, it’s rumoured that Hamilton won’t even be out on the starting grid time around, with Nyck De Vries apparently set to take the Brit’s place. Mercedes team principal, Toto Wolff, has stated that Hamilton is unlikely to race in Canada due to severe back pain after being subject to an extreme level of porpoising on the Baku City Circuit last weekend.

When it comes to drivers who will be racing, reigning champion Max Verstappen is looking like the clear favourite to power his way to victory once again here. The Dutchman coasted to victory in Azerbaijan last week to put himself firmly in the driving seat in his quest to retain the driver’s championship.

Speaking of the race to be crowned driver’s champion, Charles Leclerc will be hoping he can get back to winning ways here. The Monacan had to sample the bitter taste of disappointment once again last week as he was forced to retire (as was teammate Carlos Sainz) and badly needs to pick up a win here to avoid losing yet more ground to Verstappen.

The locals will also be delighted to see two Canadian drivers Lance Stroll (Aston Martin) and Nicholas Latifi (Williams) taking part, with Latifi racing on the Gilles-Villeneuve circuit for the very first time.

Next stop, Montreal!

The Brazilian World No.4 is the No.1 seed for the event and will be looking to find the form which bagged him his last WTT title back in September of last year. Some huge news for the competition is the return of German star Dimitrij Ovtcharov. The former world No.1 is back in action after an extended absence following an ankle injury which ultimately required surgery. Ovtcharov comes into this tournament rank 9th in the world, which places him as the second seed.

However, we have to remember that the German powerhouse boasts four World Championship silver medals, two Olympic bronze medals and also two Olympic silver medals! So, Ovtcharov may only be the second seed in Lima, but rule him out at your peril!

In the Women's Singles, it’s Adriana Diaz who heads up the roster. The Puerto Rican showboater’s best run so far this year was only a round-of-16 finish in Singapore three months ago, but as the No.1 seed here in Lima, can she find some form and weave her way to victory?

The recently crowned World No.9 may find that her route to glory will not be an easy ride, however! Japanese hotshot Asuka Sasao will be one of those throwing her hat (or bat) into the ring. She defied all the odds to emerge victorious at the WTT Feeder Fremont tournament last month in what was her first appearance in an international tournament after a three-year absence! Lima will mark Sasao’s first ever appearance at a WTT Series event. She finds herself as only the No.9 seed at this tournament, but can she defy critics once again and pull off another Hollywood victory against the odds?

It’s all to play for in Lima, get ready for a ride to remember!
