What is Bitcoin Poker?

Bitcoin Poker is online poker where you wager with bitcoin instead of US dollars or any other national currency.

Other than placing wagers and winning in bitcoin, there is no difference to the online poker you may be used to.

Playing poker online is the digital version of going into a casino to play poker physically. The rules are the same, with the key difference being that you can play from the comfort of your home at all hours of the day.

However, using Bitcoin to play online poker games comes with advantages such as faster transaction processing, low transaction fees, and anonymity.

Moreover, you won’t need to provide personal information when you bet or win in Bitcoin. The decentralized nature of the cryptocurrency makes it easier to bet and receive your winnings in full.

How Does Poker Work?

Online poker has contributed to the game’s rising popularity in recent years. It is by far the most popular card game the world over. Now, let’s take a look at how it works.

There are several variants of poker. However, we’ll go through the basic model that unifies all of them. In particular, we will use the Texas Hold’em variant of the game.

To begin with, let’s look at some of the common concepts in poker.

The Dealer

Whichever way you’re playing poker, i.e. online, at a casino, or at your house with buddies, know that the dealer determines the order of putting up blinds for players to place their bets.

The game always begins with the dealer going in the clockwise direction.

Poker Hand Rankings

A poker hand is ranked in different categories, from the highest to the lowest. Among the ranks includes lowball poker, where you can invert the ordinary poker hand rankings. By doing that, the lowest hand ranking becomes the best one.

Lowball poker versions may differ depending on whether flushes and straights are counted, and whether the ace is low or high.

Bluffing

This is a strategy that allows you to win a poker game without having the best hand. You do this by bluffing your opponents. Here, you demonstrate confidence in your hand by waging in a way that your opponent will think that your hand is better than his. You do this hoping that the other player will fall for the bluff and fold avoiding the risk of a showdown.

Forced Bets

Most poker games require that you place your bets at the start of a hand. This is commonly referred to as “blind” or “ante” with most games having a small blind and a big blind. Usually, the big blind is twice bigger as the small blind.

Based on the confidence of your hand, you can only use the betting options indicated below.

  • All-in: When you don’t have enough chips to make a wager, you can sacrifice all your remaining chips. Any further betting is placed in a side pot by the other players, and you can only win from the all-in pot you have bet on.
  • Raise: Here, you increase the amount of your existing wager within the same betting round.
  • Call: You call by matching the opponent's raise or bet.
  • Check: Here, you can decide to not place a bet while holding the right to do it later in the poker game. This is only until the players place the first round of betting.
  • Fold: This is where you sacrifice all the bets you placed before and opt-out from the hand.

Most poker games usually have at least two betting rounds where you can utilize the betting options discussed above. But, the poker game can only have a minimum of one round. The betting rounds can occur either at the beginning or at the end of the game, like in Texas Hold’em, which lets you strategize with the hand’s progression.

Below is a typical process of how a Texas Holdem poker game is played.

  1. Each player is dealt two cards.
  2. Players place a small blind and then a big blind.
  3. The initial betting round starts with players betting based on their hands' confidence.
  4. Three community cards are dealt by the dealer face-up.
  5. The second betting round starts.
  6. The dealer deals a fourth community card known as “the turn”.
  7. The third betting round commences.
  8. The fifth community card -commonly known as “the river” - is dealt.
  9. The final betting round ensues.
  10. All remaining players get to show their cards if two or more players have not folded.
  11. The best hand wins.

Note that there are different ways of structuring your poker game bets, the most common ones being:

  • No Limit: You can wager all of your chips whenever your turn comes.
  • Fixed Limit: Here raising and betting can only be done in fixed amounts.
  • Pot Limit: You can raise or bet any amount but not more than the total size of the pot.
