Pele’s NFT is About to Hit the Market
While traditional cryptocurrencies are in a bit of a downward spiral at the moment, the NFT world continues to thrive and attract new participants, including true sporting legends. This time around, it’s Pele whose football (or soccer) achievements have been tokenized.

The blockchain community welcomes Pele
Some of our readers might not know the first thing about modern-day soccer (or ‘football’ as the Europeans call it), but if you see yourself as a sports fan, you ought to know who Pele is as he’s a legend whose impact on the world of sports is comparable to that of Michael Jordan and Mike Tyson. However, in case you’ve forgotten, he’s still a quick reminder: Pele was the first global sports star whose career lasted for 20 years, from 1957 until 1977. During that time, he became the only player to win three World Cups and score 77 goals for his national team. His club career was divided between the Brazilian team Santos and the American New York Cosmos - during that time, Pele scored 649 goals, which is very impressive even by today’s standards.
So, you can imagine how much a trading card with such an iconic player is worth. Actually, traditional (physical) cards that depict Pele are being sold for around $20,000 on eBay, while the most expensive of them, a card from 1958 in mint condition, was auctioned for over $200,000. Therefore, it seemed only natural for the digital collectible card of a star of such magnitude to emerge in the NFT space. Given what crazy sums of money people are spending on non-fungible tokens devoted to memes, a rare digital collectible of Pele should go out for a pretty penny.
An NFT sale for a noble cause
As per the official announcement made by Ethernity Chain, a blockchain project that has created a platform to issue rare and fully authenticated NFTs and trading cards, Pele’s first-ever NFT is set to be launched on May 2. In fact, the NFT would come as a collection of trading cards developed by a digital artist named Kingsletter in partnership with Digital Lab. Nick Rose Ntertasa, the CEO of Ethernity Chain, confirmed that the team is building a huge library for digital collectibles, with Pele’s tokens being its integral part.
The blockchain firm, however, didn’t limit its pool of superstars to Pele as they have also brought onboard Fernando Tatis Jr., the Major League Baseball star who plays for San Diego Padres, and plan to release an NFT dedicated to the deceased boxing icon, Muhammad Ali.
Ethernity Chain was launched at the start of last week, and it has already enjoyed a resounding success after making $750,000 through the NFT sales on an opening day. It should be noted that nearly all proceeds raised from the sale of Pele’s card will go to his own charity that helps underprivileged children.
